Graphics Student Plants Tree for Good
May 13, 2024
Madison Blakeslee a sophomore student in Graphics came up with the idea of planting a tree on campus because Graphics uses so much paper. Madison thought it would be nice to help the environment, give birds a place to nest, and enjoy some shade and rest. After getting the proper approvals Mr. Bochicchio donated a Rose of Sharon Bush.
The rose of Sharon is a type of hibiscus shrub or small tree that produces beautiful red, white, pink, light blue, or lilac flowers. Many gardeners prize this flowering shrub because it produces stunning flowers in late summer when few shrubs are in bloom. The bush also gives off a subtle sweet scent. Caring for rose of Sharon plants is also very easy and they survive most winters well. The Rose of Sharon will give bees a great place to gather some nectar.
Despite its name, the deciduous rose of Sharon hibiscus shrub isn’t a rose but a member of the mallow family. The botanical name of rose of Sharon – Hibiscus syriacus – comes from the fact that it was collected from gardens in Syria. However, the flowering plant originates in China and the Far East.
